What is Neurontin?
Neurontin is a kind of anticonvulsant medication that is used for treating seizures associated with epilepsy or with herpes zoster (shingles) infection. It has effect on chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain. In some cases Neurontin can be used for other conditions strictly determined by a doctor. It also can be used in complex with other aids with the purpose to treat seizures caused by epilepsy in adults and children aged from 12 or partial seizures in children from 3 up 12.
How does Neurontin work?
Neurontin is an anticonvulsant. The mechanism of Neurontin’s work for preventing seizures or herpes infection is unknown.
What is Neurontin used for?
Nerontin is prescribed for treating seizure disorders and nerve damage from herpes zoster. It also can be used in other cases determined by your doctor.
How Taken
Take Neurontin strictly following doctor’s prescriptions. To achieve better effectiveness in control of your seizures, it is essential to take Neurontin pills 3 times a day, every 8 hours. Do not stay longer than 12 hours without a dose of Neurontin. It is not recommended to increase or decrease a dose of this medication without checking with your doctor. If you suddenly stop taking Neurontin it may result in the increase of the frequency of your seizures. If you missed a dose, take a pill as soon as you remember. If it is time for another dose, skip the previous dose and follow scheduled scheme. In cases of overdose take immediately an emergency call. The overdose may be followed by such symptoms: blurred vision, drowsiness, weakness, slurred speech, diarrhea.
Precautions
Before using this drug pay attention to the following precautions.
Do not use Neurontin if you have an allergy to gabapentin. If you want to start Neurontin therapy, inform your doctor in cases of being allergic to any drugs or having kidney disease, liver or heart diseases. Consult with your doctor and run special tests to safely take this medication. It should be noted that Neurontin may cause some suicidal thoughts while therapy. Inform your doctor if you observe appearance of such thoughts and depression during first months of treatment or after changes in dose. It is important to check yourself at doctor’s visits.
Do not use Neurontin if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. I can be harmful for an unborn child or pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby.
What side effects may occur?
Usage of some pills may cause side effects. That is why it is highly recommended to consult with your doctor before treating with the help of these pills. If you notice such side effects as hives; fever; swollen glands; painful sores in or around your eyes or mouth; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat get an emergency help. Inform your doctor immediately if you noticed new or worsening symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, depression, anxiety, or if you feel agitated, hostile, restless, hyperactive, suicide thoughts. Such serious symptoms as increased seizures, fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms; swelling of your ankles or feet, confusion, rapid back and forth movement of eyes, easy bruising, tremor, need an immediate emergency call.
